With proposals for the development of the bus & coach station site, and proposals for a new bus station, it became apparent that proposals fell far short of what people were expecting. The proposed new bus station would be smaller than the existing bus station, and as a result the city and county councils propose that more on-street bus stops will be provided. They say that several rural buses act as local buses which will allow people to be dropped off nearer to where they want to go.
Civic Society members were alarmed at these proposals because they did not seem to meet the city and county council’s aspirations for a high quality bus station, and a step change in bus patronage. As a result we organised meetings with interested people who had made representation to the city council planners in December 2015. From these meetings came the desire to establish a bus users group (BUG), and an initial meeting was held on 10 February 2016.
They continue to liaise with DCC as the local highway authority responsible for bus services across Devon, as well as Stagecoach.
