Exeter Civic Society

About us

The Civic Society is an influential and respected local voice which is consulted on new developments within the city, and aims to promote high standards of planning and architecture in Exeter. Our members come from all walks of life and anyone is welcome to join, whether they just wish to keep informed on the latest developments or are keen to participate or comment. Preserving, protecting, developing and improving the historic features of Exeter are important to us, but we also welcome new development which will enhance the city whilst maintaining its character and beauty.

What do we do:

  • Maintain contact with planning authorities and scrutinise planning applications to ensure they are of high standard and good design
  • Ask members to give us their views on larger developments
  • Put forward comments and views on current developments to the press and city planners
  • Provide information on Exeter’s geography, history, natural history and architecture
  • Keep records of existing Blue Plaques and commission new ones
  • Arrange monthly talks about people, activities and the history of the City
  • Arrange visits to places of local interest
  • Keep members up to date with local developments and forthcoming events through an e-mailing list and regular newsletter
  • Hold a monthly Open Morning where visitors and guests are welcome to socialise with members and ask any questions they may have

Remember, if you live in Exeter this is your Civic Society.

Our Structure

We have a Planning group, a Highways & Transport group a River, Canal & Quayside group, and a Blue Plaques group to study and monitor these areas of interest.

If you want to ask questions, come along to one of our Open Mornings, held every third Saturday of the month (except August) from 10.30am – 12.00pm at the Mint Methodist Church, Fore Street. We have a short talk about an aspect of Exeter (past or present) and you are welcome to hear the speaker, meet members, and enjoy refreshments. There is a small fee for non members, but annual membership is only £10.00.

We are always keen to develop and promote the Society further and participate in new ventures which will benefit Exeter. Any member with ideas, vision and enthusiasm for new activities will be encouraged and supported.
