Then, Now and Next Walk: Tree Walk in Bull Meadow Park, St. Leonard’s

Wednesday 10th September at 14:00-16:00
Meet David Solman at the entrance to the park in Bull Meadow Road, behind Hotel du Vin.
David Solman will lead our second tree walk, this time through Bull Meadow Park in St. Leonard's. The ground of the park is uneven, so please bring adequate footwear. There will be a chance to sit together for a cup of tea and biscuit afterwards in the nearby 'Old St. Leonard's Hall' in Roberts Road, EX2 4HD.

Next to the Dissenters Graveyard and the old Jewish Cemetry is Bull Meadow Park. Our Society teamed up with the tree enthusiast Ed Dolphin from the Sidmouth Arboretum to do a tree survey of this little, at times overlooked park in St Leonard’s. There is a substantial amount of mature trees to be found in the grounds. So if you want to learn how to identify trees or are interested in the open green space, please book yourself in for this event (for details see box further down). Steve Mariner will provide some local history information about the site to contextualise the space.

This is a first step in a project where the ‘Tree Preservation Taskforce’ of Exeter Civic Society will team up with local residents to put information together with the aim to make the place more enjoyable for users, raise awareness for the park and make an effort to protect the mature trees and the grounds for the public. You will remember that part of the park recently became a building site for the repair of sewers; there was also the danger of loosing part of the park with a building project between Temple Road and Fairpark Road, a project that for the time being is no longer pursued. A good time to take stock of what little gem we have here for the residents.

A similar project is planned for the street trees in Prospect Park.

The ‘walk’ ends with a cup of tea and a biscuit, as well as a brief meeting and discussion of next steps in ‘Old St Leonards Hall’ in Robert’s Road.
