Open Meeting: The UK’s First Civic Arboretum

Saturday 18th April at 10:30 - 12:15
The Mint Methodist Church Centre, Fore Street, Exeter EX4 3AT
A social event where visitors and guests are welcome and refreshment will be available. Ed Dolphin, our speaker for this meeting, will talk about Sidmouth Arboretum. Sidmouth's remarkable treescape was recognised in 2012 when the town and surrounding valley were declared a Civic Arboretum where all the local trees are celebrated. Originally a community led project, it is now a registered charity dedicated to engaging people with their trees and enhancing the treescape.

Our Tree Preservation Taskforce met Ed Dolphin first when we prepared a tree listing for the grounds of Larkbeare House two years ago. With his intense knowledge he was very helpful in identifying the trees in this Veitch garden. We ever since have held good contact with Ed, who has become an inspiration for our work on city trees. With his help we managed to start our work on local tree maps. We are very much looking forward to his talk to our society where he will report about how the Sidmouth Civic Arboretum came to life and how a community led project got the recognition of the local council and established itself as a registered charity. ‘The way to get things done, is to get the public behind an idea and use this to get the council involved’, he says and adds with a smile, ‘that he is not a tree specialist, but only a tree enthusiast’. We are looking forward to this enthusiasm to catch our audience.

Ed Dolphin also has invited our society to be part of a walk he plans for 6 May, inspecting the trees around County Hall. This walk, where we will be guests, will start at the earlier time of 11am.

Parking onsite is limited for disabled people only, telephone the Mint on 01392 279786 to reserve a space. This City Centre venue is well served by public transport and there are public car parks nearby.
