‘West Country Wrestling’ tells the story of champion 19th century wrestler, Abraham Cann. Born in Colebrooke, near Crediton, he lived much of his life in Exeter and was the landlord of two pubs there. On 23rd October 1826, he fought at Devonport against the champion of Cornwall, James Polkinghorne, in probably the most iconic wrestling match of the 19th century, in front of at least 10,000 spectators. Although he was successful in his profession, Cann’s life was also marked by great tragedy, as will be described in the talk.
