Open Meeting: George Brendon on ‘Abraham Cann and West Country Wrestling’

Sunday 17th January at 10:30 - 12:15
The Mint Methodist Church Centre, Fore Street, Exeter EX4 3AT
A social event where visitors and guests are welcome and refreshment will be available. George Brendon will talk to us about his new book about 'West Country Wrestling', describing the rise and fall of a regional obsession in the 1820s. In the centre are two legendary regional figures from Cornwall and Devon, with Abraham Cann living for much of his life in Exeter. The talk provides glimpses of the raw, atmospheric world of C19 sports - a time of crowded taverns, smugglers, shipwrecks and fierce country pride.

‘West Country Wrestling’ tells the story of champion 19th century wrestler, Abraham Cann. Born in Colebrooke, near Crediton, he lived much of his life in Exeter and was the landlord of two pubs there. On 23rd October 1826, he fought at Devonport against the champion of Cornwall, James Polkinghorne, in probably the most iconic wrestling match of the 19th century, in front of at least 10,000 spectators. Although he was successful in his profession, Cann’s life was also marked by great tragedy, as will be described in the talk.

Coffees and teas will be available from 10:30, the talk will start after a short overview of Exeter Civic Society’s latest work at about 11.10.

Parking onsite is limited for disabled people only, telephone the Mint on 01392 279786 to reserve a space. This City Centre venue is well served by public transport and there are public car parks nearby.
