Open Meeting: Estelle Buckridge, Volunteer Manager of ‘Exeter Heritage Volunteers’ speaking about their project

Saturday 18th January at 10:30 - 12:00
The Mint Methodist Church Centre, Fore Street, Exeter EX4 3AT
A social event where visitors and guests are welcome and refreshment will be available. 'Exeter Heritage Volunteers' have just been awarded 3 years funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund starting from 1st November. They will be spending the next few weeks putting plans in place for the future and introduce them to us at this meeting.

The ‘Exeter Heritage Volunteers’ is a scheme set up by a group of heritage organisations in Exeter, including the historic Guildhall, Exeter Cathedral and RAMM.

Estelle Buckridge says: “We have been encouraging volunteers to come forward and sign up for different exciting heritage projects across the city and they have been helping to preserve and clean items and help organise specials events, while gaining some access to special areas and taking part in some exclusive tours.”

The ‘Exeter Heritage Champions’ is a pilot programme funded by the National Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Exeter Heritage Partnership Network, supported by Exeter City Council. It is based across Heritage sites in the city of Exeter, allowing volunteers to try their hand at volunteering at a variety of venues. Volunteers can learn about the Heritage of the city, make a contribution to the local community while learning and practicing new skills and having fun with others!

Volunteering activities include:

  • Heritage cleaning and book cleaning,
  • general conservation of artefacts,
  • gardening,
  • silver and brass polishing,
  • supporting historical events and re-enactments,
  • shadowing education and family events,
  • public engagement and stewarding at festivals and events,
  • front-of-house and customer-facing roles.

You could…

  • access training in a variety of transferable skills such as public engagement, conservation, inclusion and diversity, safeguarding and first aid
  • get inductions and exclusive ‘behind-the-scenes’ access to venues across the city such as Devon and Exeter Institution, Tuckers Hall, Historic Guildhall, Custom House and St. Nicholas Priory
  • make friends in a diverse group of volunteers from across the city who work together in a social and supportive atmosphere
  • get to chose what shifts you want to do to fit around work, study and other plans.

Parking onsite is limited for disabled people only, telephone the Mint on 01392 279786 to reserve a space. This City Centre venue is well served by public transport and there are public car parks nearby.
