We all moan about our bus services and the railways, but a lot of us seem to have accept that streets are dominated by cars we drive or park. The recently started ‘Heavitree and Whipton Active Streets Trial’ has brought the dominance of traffic to the forefront of citizens’ minds. Elsewhere there have been plans for low car-use in all major new developments here in Exeter for quite some time. The new settlement along the railway line next to Prince Charles Road has started is one of the first large scale low car developments. We also know that we must make changes to achieve a zero-carbon future. This sounds acceptable in general, we seem to do much worse when we try to integrate this in practice.
Active travel and new solutions in our city with its rural belt is an obvious area for change. As individual car ownership is the most exclusive and space occupying means of transport, how can other traffic solutions work? What do ‘Active Streets’ look like? What will be needed to make moving within and into the city more environmentally sustainable and at the same time a more pleasant experience?
Exeter City Councillors Moore and Bennett will come up with suggestions and ideas, which could become actual steps towards a new ‘Active Travel’ future in our city.
