The 2023 Exeter Respect Festival will be held at Belmont Park on 10 and 11 June. 26 years on from the first festival in 1997. Dr Suaad Genem-George, Festival chair and managing director,will talk about the purpose and history of the festival and its aims and achievements. She will also look to what the future holds for it.
Exeter Respect is the city’s annual celebration of diversity which uses the performing and creative arts to engage the wider community in saying no to racism and all forms of prejudice. The Respect ethos is a simple one: racism and prejudice often spring from fear, and fear is often based on ignorance. Ignorance can be overcome by getting to know one another and sharing not shunning different cultures. One of the best ways to get to know someone is to enjoy yourself with them. Since 2009, Exeter Respect has held an annual two day festival in Belmont Park, bringing together many of Exeter’s different cultures through music, art, dance and food. About 20,000 people attend the Festival each year. Now is a great time to learn more about the festival and to have one’s appetite whetted for the next one in June.
