Allen, Rachel

1924-1930
First Labour Woman Exeter City Councillor

Rachel Allen (1899-1930) was one of the first women to sit on Exeter City Council, and was the first woman to represent the Labour Party on it. She was a Councillor from 1927 until her untimely death in 1930. She also founded the Exeter and District Women’s Welfare Association, which set up a number of women and children’s health clinics in the city.

She lived at “Redvers” in Alphington Street, St Thomas from 1924 until her death.

This plaque is one of two erected by the Exeter Labour Women’s Council in 2019 to commemorate the centenary in 2018 of the extension of the franchise to women.
